Don't Shun Salvage!

Have you ever explored the world of reclamation? It’s a great way to revive something with heritage – so don’t shun salvage! Compare it with the quality of mass produced furniture. Laminates and flat packs do have their place but do take time to investigate the arts of restoration, reinvention and recycling.

There are salvage yards all over the country providing a rich source of fixtures and fittings which help with individual style detailing such as door & cupboard handles & hinges, light switches, etc – the list is endless.

Think about flooring … classic parquet or broad pine boards – or if you’re lucky enough, oak flooring. It gets you away from uniform perfection, it can be inexpensive and it can provide a stunning authentic theme. (Top tip when ‘Grouting”: A tiler told me, over a hearty brew, to mix in tea instead of just water to enhance that authentic look!)

So think of a project and embrace a new world of old inside or out. Inject interest and enjoy the hunt for the charming, the characterful, the conversation pieces. Make a bygone era relevant in the throwaway culture of 21st century living. Architects and designers are embracing the hidden gems so why not get in on the act?

Happy Hunting!
